Morphy’s auction gallery is filled with the sounds of noisy fun this month, as Dan Morphy’s team prepares for a Nov. 20-21 sale of coin-operated machines and antique advertising.
Day 1 is devoted primarily to entertainment and gambling machines of the late 19th/early 20th century, While Day 2 will feature antique advertising and general antiques. A bonus category in the opening session is a grouping of 78 early floor-model and countertop cash registers, many of them ornate and with toppers that display messages, such as “Pay Here,” “Amount Purchased,” or the name of the business establishment.
The machines in this auction were ingenious and amazing for the times in which they were invented—a 1905 multiple-cylinder phonograph that allowed patrons to pick and play any song from a 24-tune playlist, an early 20th-century steam-powered Butter-Kist Popcorn and peanut-roasting machine.
A 1942 Rock-Ola jukebox that looks like an Art Deco fantasy from the film Metropolis. And then there’s the giant 1920s leaded-glass Coca-Cola display bottle that collectors never have a chance to buy. It’s estimated at $50,000-$80,000.
That’s just a sampling of what to expect.
